How does Fraxel work?
Fraxel laser treatment produces thousands of tiny but deep microscopic treatment zones in your skin that eliminate old pigmented cells in the outer layer of skin (epidermis) and penetrate the underlying dermis. For every area of damaged skin Fraxel treats, it leaves surrounding skin untouched. This “fractional” approach stimulates the body’s restorative abilities and allows the skin to heal much faster than if the entire area were treated at once. The natural healing process creates new, healthy, and tighter tissue to replace damaged skin.
Because Fraxel spares healthy tissue, it is effective on delicate areas including the neck, chest and hands.
What happens during Fraxel treatment?
Fraxel treatments are typically applied in four to five sessions, scheduled four weeks apart. Approximately 20% to 30% of the skin will be resurfaced during each session. Skin Solutions aestheticians will treat you on an outpatient basis, under the supervision of one of our experienced Plastic + Hand plastic surgeons or physician assistants.
To begin each session, your aesthetician will cleanse the skin and apply a topical anesthetic that will take effect in an hour or so. The actual Fraxel procedure takes 20 to 25 minutes.
How long will Fraxel results last?
Results of Fraxel laser treatment are immediate and progressive. Optimal results are usually visible in three to four months. As long as you take good care of your skin, you can enjoy long-lasting results. Eventually, age and the elements may cause unwanted changes, in which case, we can repeat your Fraxel laser treatments. Maintenance treatments can be performed every 8 to 12 months.
Are there side effects to Fraxel treatment?
The most common side effect experienced with Fraxel is a mild sunburn sensation that lasts for two to four hours after treatment. You can also expect some redness and swelling, which will vary depending on the treatment and your skin type. These are normal signs that your skin is healing. Further signs of repair include a temporary bronzing of the skin and flaking of old epidermal skin as it is replaced by healthy new tissue. We recommend using sunscreen at least twice daily to protect your skin from sun exposure for several months after treatment.

You can apply makeup or shave 12 hours after treatment. Many patients can return to routine activities immediately while others require a bit more time.
Who should consider Fraxel Laser Treatment?
FDA-approved, Fraxel laser treatment is safe and effective for anyone with age spots, acne scars, wrinkles around the eyes and even melasma (commonly referred to as the “mask of pregnancy”).
